In a significant development in the gaming world, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have officially filed a lawsuit against Pocketpair, the developer behind the indie game Palworld. The lawsuit, announced on September 18, seeks an injunction against alleged patent infringements and compensation for damages related to Palworld, which has drawn comparisons to Pokémon due to its unique blend of mechanics.
Nintendo's statement emphasized its commitment to protecting its intellectual property, asserting, "Nintendo will continue to take necessary actions against any infringement of its intellectual property rights, including the Nintendo brand itself, to safeguard the assets it has cultivated over the years."
The legal action comes after months of speculation regarding potential infringement. In January, Nintendo indicated it would investigate Palworld’s content, while earlier in June, Pocketpair claimed they had not received any formal complaints from Nintendo despite the ongoing discourse about the game's similarities to Pokémon.
Palworld, which launched in early access on PC and Xbox in January 2024, quickly gained popularity and controversy. While many fans pointed out its resemblance to Pokémon, Pocketpair has maintained that the game is more aligned with survival crafting titles like Ark: Survival Evolved and Valheim. The community manager even noted that the backlash has led to extreme reactions, including death threats directed at the development team.
